Fragments: A Classical Recital on Gabriola Island

Date: April 22
Time: 7:30 PM
Location: The Phoenix Auditorium at The Haven

Overview
Fragments is more than a musical recital—it’s a shared journey through sound, memory, and connection. Presented by two artists with roots in British Columbia, this program weaves together pieces that reflect fragments of heritage, personal stories, and the universal resonance of music.

As performers, the Gulf Islands hold deep significance in our lives. These landscapes—with their trees, cliffs, and sea—serve as both a backdrop and an inspiration for our program. By bringing Fragments to Gabriola Island, we aim to create an intimate experience where music converges with memory, inviting our audience to explore the fragments of their own stories alongside ours.

Through Fragments, we invite you to join us on this heartfelt journey—a celebration of connection, heritage, and the timeless beauty of music.

PROGRAM

Experience a thoughtfully curated recital program that intertwines classical traditions with personal narratives:

  • **Poulenc’s **Banalités
Playful and poignant, these French songs capture fragments of nostalgia and the spirit of wandering—echoing the beauty of the islands.
  • **Andrew Staniland’s **Peter Quince at the Clavier
A contemporary Canadian work reflecting mystery and tension, resonant with the rugged charm of the Gulf Islands.
  • **Peter Lieberson’s **Rilke Songs
A profound setting of Rilke’s poetry exploring memory, introspection, and love, set against the backdrop of Gabriola’s natural beauty.
  • Schubert’s Songs
Timeless selections like Der Zwerg and Der Lindenbaum bring universal stories to life, mirroring the wild splendor of the islands.
  • Komitas’s Armenian Songs
A deeply personal connection to heritage, these songs honor the enduring vibrancy of Armenian culture and the fragments of ancestry that shape us.
